holy shit this deserves way more fucking notes
i can’t reblog it enough, please get this through your skulls. i can’t walk home at night past 10 pm without being terrified that every guy that hollers at me is going to follow me home. it’s fucked up. it’s unfair. our culture sucks. we need to fix it. rape is never okay. never. if the rapist is the girl’s boyfriend it still counts. rape is rape. no is no. no answer is no. you shouldn’t beg and plead until someone’s uncomfortable. take the hint. end this bullshit.
wow.

Something about this stereotype really grinds my gears. I got 100 on my last theory exam of undergrad, which was pretty comprehensive? I’ve never really felt totally lost or acted like “theory won’t matter to…They’re worse in Ear Training where I go to school. When a percussionist can sight-sing pitch paradigms better than the vocalists, there’s a problem.
See, that’s another misconception; that voice majors are automatically good at sight singing. I can say from experience that my sight singing at my college audition sucked. I’ve improved about 12345% since then, and have passed Aurals I & II with flying colors but I still know other voice majors who are not good at sight singing. But once they learn a solo piece, they’ll blow you away with their voice. It’s a whole different skill than singing a prepared piece with great tone, breath etc.. Piano majors also have to sight read at times, but no one gives them shit if theyre not “good” at it, and if theyre not, it doesnt invalidate their musical talent. I dont mean to get over defensive but honestly, people need to just lay off voice majors I think.
Music. Theory. Applies. In. Every. Music. Job. Whether or not you believe it, it does. Performance majors need to be able to analyze music to write cadenzas that make sense and actually work well within the context of the song. Teachers need to be able to distinguish chordal patterns in piano parts if they can’t play the actual piano accompaniment (Which happens a lot). You’ll be surprised how much you need it once you finish college with a music degree.
Now, as for people thinking that voice majors need to be good at ear training or sight singing, you guys have a different process for sight singing than voice majors do. COMPLETELY different. I’m a voice major who is relatively good at aural skills because I’m an auditory learner in every aspect. The reason some aren’t is because they don’t learn that way and they don’t know how to increase pitch memory or they just can’t audiate well without something keeping the key behind them. It has nothing to do with what your instrument is. Being a good singer does not in the least mean that you are good at aural skills or sight singing.
Hello hi voice major, music INDUSTRY to boot, and I just received an A in Theory 4, which is composed of an analysis paper every week, including a final paper on the entire first movement of Schubert’s String Quintet. I got no lower than an A- on any paper. And, an A in all of my college Ear Training classes. Plus a 5 on the AP Theory exam. What were you saying about vocalists and theory?
